“If I had to attribute my HSC success to one thing, I’d say it was my support network. My family, friends and teachers were crucial in motivating me to keep getting better, experimenting with and refining my study system until I had established a set of habits that worked. Having experienced it myself, I know that it's possible to reshape how we learn. However, conventional education and tutoring methods haven’t caught up with what the latest research tells us learning cognition. Recognising the potential for targeted academic mentoring to close the divide, Luca and I founded Synapse Tutoring.”
Ethan is currently studying a Bachelor of Advanced Computing and a Bachelor of Science at The University of Sydney. If he’s not writing code or working on a lab experiment, you’ll find him training at the athletics track!

“I have always been a curious individual. My curiosity led me to investigate the idea of learning how to learn as I recognised its potential benefits. I was also curious about how understanding psychology and physiology could benefit not only academic performance, but substantially improve every aspect of my life. Exploring contemporary research on these areas, such as how bad habits can be broken and why they persist, when humans are the least energetic during the day, and the science of learning while sleeping proved to be invaluable during my HSC journey. It was this mutual fascination and passion that inspired Ethan and me to establish Synapse Tutoring which has provided us great opportunities to share our evolving understanding of how we learn.”
Luca is currently studying a Bachelor of Advanced Computing majoring in Computer Science at the University of Sydney. Luca’s multidisciplinary interests include programming, music, literature, neuroscience and psychology, and he is keen to explore the interactions between them, particularly the fusion of music and programming. He loves listening to the music of Alexander Scriabin.
What began as a way to give back to our school has evolved into an ambitious commitment to innovate on the crucial process of student learning development. From humble beginnings delivering study-skills masterclasses to proceeding cohorts, we’re committed to the journey of exploring the full potential of academic mentoring to transform student learning experiences and results.
